In my opinion,
One of the biggest pitfalls to trucking can be the lack of personal contact with friends, family, and loved ones. Thank goodness for the cell phone, but it can be a poor substitution for that real in person contact. Many drivers, including myself spend weeks on the road, with only the phone or emails to keep in touch. I would be interested in knowing what some of my fellow truckers do to help resolve this problem.

When I drove expedite how I got through being on the road. Was I carried a lot of pics of my kids. I used my cell phone. Sometimes I took them with me. That was the best because my son and I became really close. It was a great way to get a teenager to talk. I also had a portable DVD player and watched Camcorded recordings.

100% aggreement, above all else I believe this is the biggest pitfall out of all them for Over the road drivers. I've lost touch with a lot of my close friends, and have gone through a couple relationships. And although cell phones are a good way to keep in touch it's so damn expensive, I know myself I'm paying about 350-500 a month for my canadian and US cell phone just to keep in touch with friends and family. Three weeks ago I broke down and got a Web cam and setup on my laptop to allow me to do a live interaction which works great with most of my parents since they can see me and talk to me withtout having to take 2 hours to type out what they wanted to say.
Another great thing now is that 10-4 they have on some of the cell phones, my family and friends get in contact with me all the time pretty well whereever I am and it's very very inexpensive to use!

`I love the laptope to have the contact with family and friends. Using the web also is great way to chat and see each other and chat. And best of all..less than 100 dollars pr month...and pay your bills online.. there is good and bad in everything...just dont do the bad ..lol...

`make arrangements and bring family members on the road with you for 1-2 week spurts. Summer is a great time for the kids. Just before Feb. 14th or an anniversary is awesome for the spouse. plus, with the grandparents watching the kids for a week or two, it's a great escape for the wifey! Depending on the size and age of your family, this makes for great mini-vacations for them, strengthens family bonds, helps them to understand your job and what you go thru, and reduces periods of isolation and loneliess on your part.
